Medjugorje „visionaries”

A couple years ago, one of my neighbors called me a „bump on the log” because I told her that I wasn’t interested in excitement.  „Excitement is the LAST thing I want in my life,” I told her, and then explained that what I want is quiet joy, blessedness, and peace.  She just didn’t get it.

I am reminded of that woman when I encounter people who have a slavish devotion to modern seers such as „Maria Divine Mercy,” the Bayside apparitions, and Medjugorje.  I keep asking these devotees why they hang their hat on unrecognized, unapproved visionaries and mystics when we have such a wealth of recognized mystics in the church.  No one can give me a coherent answer.

My conclusion is that what people really want is excitement.  How thrilling to be in on the ground floor of a mystical phenomena!  How satisfying to be the recipient of special attention, contact or graces.  Who needs the saints of dusty old tomes when you can touch a real, live person and know that this person has actually seen the blessed Virgin Mary!

It’s sad, really.  Instead of contacting the saints and our Blessed Mother directly, fans of the modern quasi-mystics are going through other human beings to get that touch of the divine that they crave.

I talk to the saints and Mary all the time, and I don’t have to travel to do it.  They are available to us all the time in all locations, and they help us approach God.  They are certainly more available to me than some kids in Boznia who claim to see the Blessed Virgin Mary.  Why should I hang on the words of someone in Boznia when I can experience God in my own dreams, visions and meditations?

God is right here with you and me.  He is involved in our lives, thoughts, aspirations and dreams.  The more pure in heart we become, the clearer we can see him.  The saints hold our hands and help us approach.  How much more exciting can you get?

Two people defriended me from Facebook today because of my attitude about Medjugorje.  I kept asking why choose Medjugorje that is unrecognized when you can choose a doctor of the church who is a mystic who IS recognized?  Why?  No answer came.

This brings up another point.  If you are Catholic and you know that the seers have not been recognized by the church, why risk it?  Why hotly defend the seers on Facebook and elsewhere?  Why spend scads of money traveling to some other country, money that would be better spent on the poor?

I am not saying that Medjugorje is a fraud, though some are saying that.  I am simply saying that it is not recognized, so why risk it?  Why throw all one’s eggs in THAT basket when there are sturdier baskets to be had?  What if, years from now, the Catholic Church comes out and outright condemns Medjugorje as having no supernatural influence at all?  After years of obsessive devotion to the cause, will the devotees abandon it, or will they continue to hotly protest and give their own personal revelations, feelings and experiences as proof?

I suspect that what we have is not a surfeit of faith, but a weakness of faith instead.  Perhaps those that have attached themselves to the Medjugorje phenomena do not believe that they themselves have access to the saints who have gone on to heaven?  Maybe God isn’t real to them and they need something intense to whip their flagging faith?  I really don’t know.

„What can I do to help?” is what I should be asking myself, instead of criticizing these poor people.  How can I encourage people in their own personal walk with God and convince them of the exquisite availability of the saints, angels and blessed who are gathered around us so they can lead us to the Divine?

I’ll have to give this some thought.  I’ll get back to you.
